The three roles of nutrition

What are three roles of nutrition?

Depending on the diet, the nutrients ingested are classified into the following three roles.

The three effects can be obtained by the action of nutrients contained in various foods.

Also, the nutrients that humans need are classified into 6 types: "carbohydrate", "lipid", "protein", "mineral (inorganic)", "vitamin" and "water".

1. Generate energy

Energy is indispensable for the survival of various living things, including humans.

The nutrients required for energy are mainly "carbohydrates" and "lipids", but “proteins” can also supply energy.

Recently, as I go on a diet, I've come to hear about removing carbohydrates, but if I don't eat carbohydrates at all, I'm running out of energy-producing products.

Maybe some people have experienced that if they run out of energy, they will lose strength.

In other words, it's like losing weight by making your body disorder on your own intention.

On the contrary, if you eat too much, you will have too much energy and it will accumulate in your body as fat, which may cause obesity.

Therefore, when cooking, it is necessary to consider these issues together.

2. Build body tissue and promote growth

Many nutrients are involved in building the tissues of the body.

Therefore, depending on what kind of nutrients you take and how much you take in, it will greatly affect your body shape.

In areas with strong carnivorous culture, proteins provide strong energy and tend to be large.

Also, in areas where food is scarce and insufficient nutrition is available, the body is thin and weak.

The nutrients needed to make human body tissue are the "proteins" that make muscles and the "minerals" that make bones and blood.

In addition, "lipids" that strengthen blood vessels and cell membranes are not as strong as proteins and inorganic substances, but they also play a role in building body tissues.

Although water does not build directly our body,  it consists most of the human body.

3. Adjustment of body function

It is nutrients such as "vitamins" and "minerals" that regulate the function of the body.

Vitamins are organic compounds such as "carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen", and minerals are substances represented by element symbols such as "iron (Fe), calcium (Ca)".

Both vitamins and minerals are low in foods, but they are important nutrients for maintaining the health of the human body.

In the Age of Exploration, the importance of vitamins had been proven.

On the ship, mainly wheat, many sailors got sick due to the long-term shortage of vegetables.

This led to advances in enzyme chemistry and the clarification of the importance of vitamins.

It is very important to think about which nutrition is needed in combination based on the three roles given to the human body.
