What is Shokuiku?

Why doing Shokuiku?

Pros and cons of Shokuiku

How can we practice Shokuiku?

What is Shokuiku?

In Japan, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries defines dietary education as "the basis of life and the basis of intellectual, virtue , and physical education."

In addition, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology defines that "children acquire correct knowledge about food and desirable eating habits."

Thus, Shokuiku can be regarded as "education to learn basic diets that helps to the foundation for life."

Why doing Shokuiku?

The "Food Education Basic Law" is a law established in 2005 in Japan. The Basic Law on Food Education aims to solve various problems related to food.

At the time this law was enacted, there were various anxieties related to food.

For example, lonely eating, malnutrition, and poor physical condition, which is one of the causes of eating habits.

In addition, there is a food shortage that needs to be improved in Japan. Since Japan relies on imports for most of its ingredients, it was necessary to increase the self-sufficiency rate of safe foods.

Pros and cons of Shokuiku

There is not piratically cons of Shokuiku. There are merits of shokuiku and demerits of not learning Shokuiku.

Pros of Shokuiku

Shokuiku improves concentration, work ability, and learning ability.

Eating a well-balanced diet regularly is effective in improving concentration, work ability, and learning ability.

Breakfast is especially important, and if children skip breakfast, their body and brain will run out of energy and they will not be able to study or exercise as they wish.

Shokuiku boosts Immunity

Immunity is indispensable for human life to attack when viruses and bacteria enter the body, but if children do not have a proper diet, their immunity will be weakened and they will soon get a cold. Not only is it easy to pull and get tired, but it also poses a great health risk, such as the fact that once you get sick, it is difficult to recover.

With the right knowledge in Shokuiku, it is possible to avoid foods that contain chemicals such as additives and pesticides.

Shokuiku enhances emotion grows

Shokuiku has a great influence not only on the physical growth but also on the mental growth. For example, a child who eats alone and a child who always eats with someone can make a big difference in mental stability. When they eat with someone, the image that "meal is fun" is firmly established, and you naturally value your meal. Therefore, it helps to control their emotions.

Shokuiku gives Learning opportunities of the manners in eating

Another important benefit of Shokuiku is that they can learn the manners of eating. Not so much as a child, but table manners are very important for adults. It is a great advantage to be able to acquire proper etiquette through Shokuiku from childhood.

demerits of not learning Shokuiku

Possibility of creating a taste accustomed to an unbalanced diet

It is said that the basic part of human taste is completed in their early ages.

Therefore, people who eat a proper meal in their childhood will like it for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, if they continue to eat junk food, high-fat meals, and meals with a lot of additives in their childhood, they will end up preferring unbalanced diets even as adults.

Possibility of becoming obese from within a child

Fat cells are completed in child’s age at the same time as taste. If they take too much fat, fat cells will grow, and they are more likely to become obese from childhood.

collapse of the foundation for lifelong health

Shokuiku brings lifelong health. A high-fat diet can cause lifestyle-related diseases. But if you eat an unbalanced diet irregularly since they were a child, they may not be able to develop proper habits and their lifelong health foundation may be broken.

Possibility of adverse effects on personality and behaviour

What is done in Shokuiku includes not only an interest in food, but also an interest in preparing and cooking food, and thanking the producers of ingredients. If they don't do proper Shokuiku, they may end up becoming a person who doesn't appreciate the person who prepares the food or the food itself.

How can we practice Shokuiku?

for preschoolers

In Shokuiku for infants before entering elementary school, let's aim to "cultivate the motivation to eat". It is necessary to devise such things as "add a little more food that the child likes" and "put out an amount that seems to be exhausted and have the child refill it if it is eaten". Purchasing and cooking ingredients together in our daily lives is also effective in fostering interest in food in early childhood.

for elementary school students

For elementary school students who are growing physically and mentally, let's do Shokuiku with the main purpose of "acquiring basic eating habits". It is important to convey the regular meals and the importance of eating a balanced diet of ingredients. Learning proper serving methods and table manners are also essential. Tell little by little as we eat together every day.

for high school students

It is good ideas to convey the importance of eating habits to high school students who often have disordered lifestyles due to studying, sports activities, and playing. The key points are "eating three meals at a fixed time" and "eating a staple food, main dish, and side dish in a well-balanced diet" so that they can lead a healthy life cantered on meals. Guide themselves to manage their diet and health care in the future.
