 Pet scams

I read an article about pet scams in Australia which involve selling non-existent animals   online.

The article said that 2131 cases of pet scams have been reported this year compared with 498 in 2019. The reason behind this is COVID-19 generates people's feeling of loneliness. In Sydney, we have been under lockdown for 12 weeks and people are forced to stay at home without physical contact from others. Someone who is living alone misses companionship, so the demand for pet is increasing.

Fortunately, I have two pet rabbits, and feel less lonely if I am alone. So, I really understand these people who are looking for a pet. The biggest effect of COVID-19 may be mental health crisis. Humans are sociable creatures and the connection with others is very important. 

Actually, I did not understand such a feeling before because I am an introvert and tend to feel tired when meeting people. 
But now I only see my husband who is working full time and does not stay at home, so I have spent most time alone for 2 months. I still have time to meet him, and I can stay with my bunnies. I think it helps me a lot from depression. 

In the article, I do not like the idea of buying pets. Of course, I feel sorry for people who lost money. But I just cannot support buying pets which sounds like "buying life".

My two rabbits come from the Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary which is an organisation protecting rabbits from difficult circumstances. 

I like adopting animals rather than buying; nevertheless, adopting a pet is not easy. The owners have responsibilities to take care of them, so the checking process whether they are suitable to get a pet is important; however, sometimes the process is too difficult. In fact, it was not easy for me because I needed to fill out so many documents and submit a copy of my ID, prepare all pet products, secure a large place and show photos to prove these in advance. Additionally, they asked for donation which cost higher than buying a pet. 

I understand why some people give up adopting a pet.

I know so many animals are killed due to abandonment, and I am very sad and really hope many people would save poor animals.
